Firefox on Ubuntu Slow and Sluggish
Hi I have ubuntu installed in both, my laptop HP nx7400 and my desktop AMD64 2Gb Ram, asus motherboard.
Firefox comes with Ubuntu 8.1 pre installed. It worked for a little while but after several updates to the system it gets really slow, I mean impossible to use slow. This is true for both computers. In the laptop I did a fresh install of Ubuntu not long ago, the desktop I installed ubuntu a long time ago and both show the exact same problem.
I was surprised that a google search on this problem returned no relevant results. Am I alone? Is this a v@ny@ linux virus which affects only my computers :)? No serious, any idea how to get firefox working? Opera works no problem but I'm (was) more confortable with firefox, syncing my bookmarks etc.
Thanks

I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 with no performance problems. You might try installing Ubuntu 8.04. If you have 8 GB to spare on your disk drive you could make a small partition and put 8.04 there to see if you like it and if it performs better than 8.10.
I'm also using Firefox 3 but I didn't have any performance problems with Firefox 2.x when I was using that.

May Not Be Firefox
I too have noticed this change over the past few days. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 with Gnome. Because web access became slow, I also installed the Ephiphany web browser and it too is painfully slow. I am in a unique situation to potentially rule out my internet connection speed, because I am using a dual boot system. When I reboot into Windows Vista, Firefox works fine there. As a result, it appears as though it is specific to a recent Ubuntu update but I have no further information other than I update often. Web tools such as Miro don't appear to be impacted.

No problem here, using both 8.04 and 8.10 with all updates. Could it be that the problems are caused by a firefox plug-in? That would be one way of explaining why some are affected and others are not.
