This is a matter of taste. The mozilla-mplayer plugin opens all media within the browser which I find irritating. I prefer it to open in my own specified player using the Firefox-extension. That player can very well be mplayer (and yes, it needs to be installed with all the codecs). The extension just gives you more options but the plugin will work aswell.
