firefox - java plugin not working - Fixed

Dear LQers,

Greetings !!. I have both firefox-3.0.18 and java installed on my RHEL5 64-bit system. But for some reasons, java plugin is not working in firefox.

$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_18"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_18-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.0-b13, mixed mode)

As per previous recommendation from this forum, I made soft link for libjavaplugin_jni.so in firefox/plugins directory.

But still it doesn't show up when I type aboutlugins in the browser, and error is shown in the public java test pages.

I am aware that I am working with 64-bit versions.

Thanks for your time and valuable suggestions !!.

First, you're running an old, unsupported, version of Fedora.
Second, you're running an old version of Firefox. (The FF site recommends version 3.6.)

So, try updating your system to Fedora 12.

Hi Ptrenholme,

thanks for the reply. By the way, my OS is RHEL5.3 not fedora and firefox3.0.18 is the
latest available in Redhat network repository. I just updated firefox this morning.

Ah so, sorry: Your "Distribution" list (on the left) lists Fedora 10 in addition to RHEL 5 and Ubuntu which caused my confusion. You did say "RHEL 5.3" in you original post.

Anyhow, did you try installing FF 3.6 from the Mozilla site? Has your problem resolved?

And apologies for this late reply: I'd been away from the Internet for a while dealing with a HD failure and lost backups, and lost your post in the clutter when I returned.

I thought you were supposed to link to 'libnpjp2.so'. '/usr/lib64/java/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so'

Code:
bash-3.1$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_16"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode)

firefox plugin - RHEL5.3 - Problem fixed

Hi Ptrenholme and Texmex, thanks for the suggestions !!.

I am sorry for replying so late. I thought my thread was dead and linuxquestions email notification went to spam folder. Fortunately I checked today while deleting the spam emails.

I installed both sun java run time environment and sun java browser plugin (java.1.6.0-18) from redhat network and made soft link to libjavaplugin and made sun java, the active one by using alternatives -config java.

Browser plugin works fine now. Sun jre and plugin has 64-bit support now.

Thanks for your time and valuable suggestions !!.
