Firefox issues

I've got an interesting issue. Whenever I go to download something on firefox the download window no longer pops up and when I open it manually, no download is going on. The assorted windows asking me where I want to save the file show up but not the download window. The weird part is that it just randomly started happening, it used to work just fine. The only thing that I can think that I did recently was install my nvidia card drivers and beryl. When I turn beryl off, it still doesn't work. It doesn't work in firefox safe mode either. I was wondering if anybody has ever happened to stumble on this problem before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What does this area look like in your Prefs... FF --> Edit --> Preferences --> Main tab --> Downloads? Is everything checked? Show the Download window? Close it when downloads finish? Etc?

Show download window when downloading a file is checked. Close when done is not.

Hmm... that is strange. I tend to doubt that it's a Beryl problem, but I could be wrong. I don't know anything about Beryl. I don't use it. Stick around... I'm sure someone else will pop in here with some suggestions for you.

Luck!

It has to be strictly a firefox issue too. Epiphany is downloading without any problems.

Run through your about:config advanced preferences and see what you can find.

I've never actually used about:config before. Is there anything you suggest looking for in specific?

browser.download.folderList default integer 0
browser.download.hide_plugins_without_extensions default boolean true
browser.download.manager.closeWhenDone default boolean false
browser.download.manager.flashCount default integer 2
browser.download.manager.focusWhenStarting default boolean false
browser.download.manager.openDelay default integer 0
browser.download.manager.retention default integer 2
browser.download.manager.showAlertInterval default integer 2000
browser.download.manager.showAlertOnComplete default boolean false
browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting default boolean true
browser.download.manager.useWindow default boolean true
browser.download.show_plugins_in_list default boolean true
browser.download.useDownloadDir default boolean true

Here is my browser.download section. It appears to be fine.

Yeah. Looks OK to me, too.

This is STRANGE! :(

When you d-load something, even though you're having probs with the d-load manager, do you still actually d-load something to somewhere?

Does your taskbar show 2 firefox icons? The download window may be there but opening behind the main firefox window.
If there are 2 icons, check Beryl-Settings > General Options > Main > Level of Docus Stealing Prevention and make sure it is set to "None"

<EDIT>
Ignore that, I didn't read the post properly.
Have you got/had any download manager extensions installed such as the download statusbar one which may be interfering?

Nope, nothing downloads.

Not that I know of.

If it were me, I'd probably try a complete removal/reinstall at this point (of Firefox, not your operating system ;) ).

I already tried that twice.

When I used to hang around mozillazine forums a long time ago the stock answer to most problems was to delete the firefox profile and start again.
This never solved any problems for me but I think in your case it could be the answer.
Or at least try moving prefs.js in the profile folder.
Something seems to have gone screwy somewhere and deleting prefs.js will undo anything thit might have been changed in about:config or anything done by any extensions but will keep all your extensions installed.
Since you've tried safe mode it's unlikely to be an extension itself causing a problem but may be a prefs issue.
If it doesn't resolve anything you can always move prefs.js back into place and try something else.
