Firefox is at an end, I need a new browser with similar features but sane management
Required features:
FLOSS (excludes opera) Ad blocking Selective Javascript blocking (like noscript) Privacy control of some kind Support for javascript Optional: User agent switching ability Any suggestions ? I'll be compiling and trying some out in the coming weeks. |
I was about to say Google Chrome, but guess that's too close to proprietary for you. How about the alternative: Chromium? You could also check out Rekonq or Midori.
|
I'm compiling midori now and it is taking a while for the deps. I may try Chromium. Have not heard of rekonq, and will try it if and when webkit compiles...
|
It looks like the Chromium source is nearly 1 GB ... I wonder how long it will take to compile that ... on second thought maybe I'll try something else.
Are there any Chromium binaries ? I mean build from Chromium but NOT Chrome, which is not FLOSS. EDIT: Midori is a waste of time as usual. Only works with certain versions of webkit and segfaults within minutes of use. Rekonq is just konqueror ... and they both need KDE, which I don't like. |
http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13...work/chromium/ and Rekonq relies on KDE (it's hoping to become the default browser in the future) so if you don't have the libs you may have quite a job to install it.
|
Forgive me if this is somewhat off topic, but what does the statement "Firefox is at an end..." mean exactly?
From time to time I try different browsers, but always end up coming back to Firefox. |

you have been around long enough Seamonkey 2.1 it has come a long way since the days i was beta testing nightly builds for mozilla 0.6 Quote:
ff 3.6 came out not to long ago then they went bonkers and but out firefox 4 then 3 weeks ( 21 days ) released firefox 5 in 6 weeks they will release ff 6 in 12 weeks from now fiefox 7 so this time next year we will be at firefox 14 -- that is insane |
Oh...I had heard that Mozilla just changed the numbering scheme up a bit. That Google had been getting lots of press by coming out with more frequent updates with a new release number, and of course offering press releases all the way. Firefox just decided to do the same.
I don't see any performance issues with Firefox, and mine was updated to Firefox 5 just the other day. |
just try to test a NEW ff version on corporate servers and office machines every 6 weeks for 100+ computers with different applications
it is an IT nightmare - up there with y2k . |
OIC....makes sense in that way. I am just a home and small home based business user.
Actually from my perspective FF works better than it used to. I used to get occasional crashes, probably memory issues from my modest computer. With FF 4 and now FF5 it actually seems more stable. But of course that does not help a bigger IT dept. :-) Take good care, OWP |

You might also try SRWare Iron https://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php |

FireFox is the forked off version and is built on seamonkey codebase |
There are some pointers to compiling chromium in the Slackware section of the forums. It does take a long time, and is quite a large download. Also, as I understand it, chromium is a dev branch, and constantly moving, so you'd be redownloading and recompiling the whole thing whenever you deem it in need of an update.
Personally I'm using Seamonkey again, it's got everything you listed, and has a more sane development cycle. |
Thanks for the suggestions.
I always keep seamonkey installed as a backup in case FF messes up. I will try to adapt it to be my main browser. As for FF being at an end, I mean that the management at FF has gone mad. They have moved to a schedule to release a new FF version every 3 months (from what I understand) and DROP SUPPORT for the previous version. This is what they have done recently, FF 5 has been released 3 months after FF 4 and FF 4 is no longer officially supported. They have stated that this is their plan for the future. So, from this I can only assume that the management at FF has gone mad, and thus FF is at an end unless forked. I have to hope for a fork and plan ahead by finding a suitable browser. Seamonkey is an option, but I wonder how long the madness will be contained to FF only and not spread, so I will keep trying others browsers too. As a last resort I have Opera, which is actually a decent browser but is not FLOSS. I have also tried Arora, and it's decent as well, but some sites don't work well with it. |

Why would you test an app on 100+ computers? Stick with something stable and save yourself the nightmares. |
