Unhappy Firefox installation segmentation fault

I am trying to install Firefox 1.0.6 on my Mandrake 10.1 system. This can only be done by tarball which i extracted (from the official mozilla site). Now when I try to issue the commands to install the program, i get the first gui dialog box, when I click 'forward/next', the installer crashes, with this message:
// the first command is to run the installer in the current directory

----------output start----------
./firefox-installer
SCIM: im_module_init
free(): invalid pointer 0x81f4658!
free(): invalid pointer 0x81f4630!
./firefox-installer: line 56: 13959 Segmentation fault ./${BINNAME}-bin $@
[roothomenet]# ./firefox-installer
SCIM: im_module_init
free(): invalid pointer 0x81f02a8!
free(): invalid pointer 0x81f0280!
./firefox-installer: line 56: 13978 Segmentation fault ./${BINNAME}-bin $@

------------ end of output---------

Now i also tried to install thunderbird and got a very similar message:
[root@homenet]# ./thunderbird
SCIM: im_module_init
free(): invalid pointer 0x8e95ac8!
free(): invalid pointer 0x8e95aa0!

can anyone tell me what might be wrong with this?
thanks
