Firefox in Ubuntu

Well... I would like to know two things:
1st: I couldn't attualize the ubuntu firefox... The version is 1.0.n and it's old... Can I attualize the original ubuntu firefox?
2nd: If not, How can I install the firefox 1.5.n from the firefox page? I downloaded it, I unpacked with tar command, but I can't configure... Apeears this way:

root@luigi:~/firefox# ./configure
bash: ./configure: File or directory not found.
root@luigi:~/firefox#

How can I solve it??? Tks... a lot...
I'm completely newbie in Linux...

what are the files in the firefox directory (where you are trying to run configure)?
Do an 'ls' command in that directory and post the contents here.

attualize?

are you asking how to update firefox? your current installed version si 1.0.x right? and you want to update to a newer version?

use 'apt-get' or 'synaptic' to manage software on ubuntu... apt-get is a command line tool, and synaptic is a GUI interface for apt-get.. it should be under system > administration or something similar. its pretty basic to use.

obviously, Luigi is not a native speaker of english.
(but rather Portuguese since he is from Brazil)
From the context, i thought he meant initialize/install

Apparently ubuntu had tied some things to firefox that make upgrading to 1.5 kind of difficult, so it's not being put in the repositories until the next version of ubuntu (scheduled for May). It's possible to install it sepeatly, with directions here
