firefox hangs on trying to download

This is odd.

My daughter has her username and password on my machine. However
she can no longer download everything. It hangs firefox altogether.

I went into .mozilla/firefox folder (in her space) and deleted the download.sqlite file... same thing. I tried to edit the "which download folder" under preferences, it hangs then too. I dried renaming the .mozilla/firefox and running firefox.

Up comes the welcome page, do you accept stuff. So we have a brand new .mozilla/firefox, it still if you try anything to do with download it freezes. (unless you do ctrl-Y, then the download
window opens- it is frozen, but at least you can quit it.

I tried konqueror, but that freezes on opening....

Meanwhile, if I run firefox from a Konsole su-ed to me, it runs fine!

I looked at my daughter's permissions on her desktop folder, and
at the environment variables. As expected, all is fine. (She wouldn't know
how to change them anyway.) Until a couple of days ago, everything was
fine. So I am at a loss to think what on Earth either she, or I have done.

It could have been me, because I am running some calculations that take days at a time, so I run them from a window in her space
after su-ing to me, then she has her space available.

Any ideas?

try creating a new user profile for her in Firefox.
Sometimes a profile will get corrupt and cause weirdness in Firefox.
Easiest way to see if that's the problem is to try a fresh profile.

Worse than that..

Well, I did move the .mozilla/firefox so firefox created a new one from scratch already. I created a new user, and logging in as the new user, I couldn't download anything. Firefox continued to work for me, but then
I created a changed my download directory, it stopped being able to
download and then when I changed back to Desktop, it still doesn't work.

Also, streaming sound has disappeared, looks as though something is getting seriously weird. I think the only cure is a reinstall.

I shall delay that til Monday, in case anyone can suggest what on Earth it
might be.

Maybe it's trying to run something like a cache cleaner. I noticed sometimes Akgregator does that and it sort of stops the computer for a few seconds like when Word is started in windows.

Debian

have you tried launching Firefox from a shell when you are logged in as her ? you may see some error messages that will shed some light on the issue.

What are the permissions on the download directory ? could this simply be a permissions issue ?

reinstall

A reinstall cured it, as expected,

Thanks for all the suggestions, but in the end I had to reinstall.

Now I have done that, I wonder if it was something to do with me
installing acroread as a firefox add-on a couple of weeks ago.
I didn't uninstall or disable pdf-reader (which wasn't working properly)
so maybe that was it?

I checked it all out today, pdf reader is working fine, as well as the rest.
