Firefox getting slower with each release
 

Hi folks,

I'm using Slackware 14.0 since some time, having a wonderful experience which even superseded my great time with 13.37.

It came pre-installed with Firefox 15.0.1 if I'm not wrong, but I removed it and installed an older version 3.6.28 because on it would start slowing down as the uptime gets high. Like if I'm up for 3 days and start Firefox, after some good start it would crawl like a panda and choosing an opened tab would take 2 seconds, even with adblock and flash block plugins.
Firefox 3.6.28 didn't have this problem but some websites would simply refuse to work properly with an older version of FF.
Right now I'm on Firefox 10.0.9 ESR, which I installed myself but situation is pretty much the same. It's slow as compared to FF 4.0 in Slackware 13.37 or for the matter FF 8.0 which I had last on my 13.37 machine.
So the scenario is that rest of the system is doing great with a low load average and just fine memory consumption because there are minimal processes running but FF 10.0.9 ESR is taking up around 500 MB memory with 2 tabs opened, one is LQ and other is FB.
Is it like FF is getting older with each newer release or I'm doing it wrong?

There might come a time that firefox will crawl as slow as internet explorer :)

Yeah I have noticed that too. But security is a bit important that we are enticed to upgrade. Although, for none sensitive surfing I use Midori, it sprints like one trying to escape from a hungry lion. :)

not sure what is slow ... i do have a slow a$$ performance on my circa 2003 Dell XP laptop cause poor thing tries to load about 20 tabs and with free space on HD been about 100mb .... everywhere else - it does work faster then i can digest the information and type. The only long outstanding issue is a full screen HD play of Adobe movies... chrome here is good. ah.. and the DNS issue on the VPN.

It seems of late Mozilla has decided to try an make the most feature-laden copycat browser rather than the best market leading browser.

I'm also using Slackware and use Google-Chrome since more than a year. I've also noticed that firefox is becomes more bloated with every release.

Yes, I'm afraid that the Firefox project has seriously lost its way, on every platform. Your observations are not imaginings.

Yea. If IE it the worse FF is getting bad.
Midori and Icecat I currently use, until I get back that seamonkey it has lately broke loose from the cell. :)

there are many big projects that lost its way. gnome is another example

I guess I'll have to surrender here. I spent couple of days more with FF 10 ESR with and without flash block & ad block plugins and believe me after 4-5 hours of FF uptime, it becomes unusable and have to be restarted manually to work normally. I don't know what happened there with FF internals but I'll use chrome and FF 4.0 or 8.0 for some time and see if it can ease out the pain.
