Firefox freezes Desktop; RealPlayer plug-in

Now that I have Firefox up and running, I have run into two additional problems:

1) Every few hours, Firefox freezes the entire Desktop and there is no response to attempts to use mouse or keyboard. I am forced to do a cold shut-down and re-boot.

2) I followed the instructions to download RealPlayer 10 for Linux but I don't seem to be able to make it work as a plug-in to Firefox.

I'd appreciate guidance on how to deal with these two problems.

TIA kjmorris

Are you sure that it's firefox that is the problem. I have a similar problem, it happens sometimes when I'm using Firefox and sometimes Evolution, but probbaly only because these are 2 of my most used apps.

Freezing desktops cold be down to a number of software or hardware issues, where is a good primer on troublshooting something like this with Linux.

The lockups may be due to some other plugin problem.

For the RealPlayer problem, open up the RealPlayer program (usually with "realplay" command), go to Tools -> Preferences..., go to Hardware tab, and deselect "Use XVideo". Everything should work now, as long as the plugin files are in the right place.

As for using RealPlayer 10 for Firefox, how exactly did you set it up? You should have the symlinks for the following two files in your Firefox plugins directory:
Code:
nphelix.so -> /usr/local/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.so
nphelix.xpt -> /usr/local/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.xpt
