Angry Firefox crashes with GLib-GObject-ERROR

Alright, so I'm having this really annoying bug on Linux. Every time I try to save anything in Firefox 3.0 (e.g. images), the browser just vanishes before the file dialog comes up. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on Gnome (with an Ubuntu 7.10 kernel). The same thing happens with Openoffice Writer, only then it freezes and I have to kill it, causing me to lose the entire file (recovery doesn't bring anything back).

I ran both programs in the shell and got the same error both times:

Code:
GLib-GObject-ERROR **: g_type_plugin_*() invalidly modified type `GFileInfo'
aborting...
I googled this message, but didn't find anything useful, only questions about similar errors with different "invalidly modified types", and even then no answers.
Any help on how to rid myself of this rubbish would be deeply appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

-A
