Firefox and .WMV

Hi,
I am having some problems with my firefox automaticly starting .wmv files upon download.

It was working fine until I lost my profile and I had to make a new one.

Under preferences:Downloads:filetypes there is an entry to automaticly play x-ms-wmv files with kaffeine, and this works for about half of the types of wmv files I download, they play in kaffeine automaticly after downloading. The rest of the WMV files I attempt to download Open up a dialogue that only gives me the option to save the file. The option to play using a certain application is greyed out, and it says it is a .BIN file. it says "you have chosen to open <filename>.wmv which is a BIN file. How do I make it so firefox will recognize these files as WMV files and not BIN files?

and also: what causes these WMV files to be recognized as BIN files as opposed to WMV files like the other ones.

thanks
Rob

If it's detected as a .bin file, and won't open, maybe you need to set the execute bit to be able to open it.
Open a term window. Cd to the folder containing the file, and give the command 'chmod +x <filename>' to change the execute permission. You may also have to change ownership to your user. Su to root, and give the command 'chown <username> <filename>', then try to open it.

Note: the commands listed should be issued without quotes.

it will open when I double click on it, in its folder. But firefox doesnt open it automaticly like it does other .WMV files. So I think the file permissions and all that are ok, the problem is firefox is recognizing some WMV files as .bin and others as WMV files (as it should). The .Bin ones just download and I have to go start them manually, where as the other one automaticly begin playing.

Install the w32-codec package then get the mplayerplug-in for firefox to play steaming media.

hi,
thanks for the reply..
that actually didnt work, because it isnt a streaming source. Its just a normal WMV file that firefox is recognizing as a bin. I can download it and start it like any other file, but Id like for it to start automaticly after I download it.

Id say about half of the WMV files i try will work and half of the others will say its a .bin file (even though the file extention is .wmv).
