Firefox addon "mediaplayerconnectivity" and playing flash video in external player.
 

I would like to have browser-embedded flash videos played in an external payer of my choice (VLC or mplayer preferrably but any would do). The addon "mediaplayerconnectivity" seems to be just the thing and indeed it works fine for everything except embedded flash videos like those on youtube or cartoon sites featuring Family Guy videos and the-like.

The problem seems to be the fact that they're embedded in a flash application and are thus ".swf" files instead of ".flv" files. Even standalone flashplayers like "gnash" can't even play these files.

So what I would like to do is to extract the ".flv" video on the fly and pipe it directly to VLC or mplayer. Is this possible? I've been looking at tools such as flvtool2 but I can't seem to wrap my head around how it's done. But someone must have figured this out. Maybe using another method entirely. I'm open for suggestions anyone?

For Youtube videos, you can use the Greasemonkey extension with the Free Youtube! script .
Maybe other scripts exists for other video sites.

Yes, but many of these scripts are tuned towards youtube and I want to be able to play *all* flash videos. Not just youtube vids. It must be possible.

In fact, maybe I'm not so open to other suggestions as I thought. I really would like to use the mediaplayerconnectivity addon for this.

Would probably be a better choice, it is better maintained and it is used by more people.

I'll defintely take a look at it but I don't really want to download anything (at least not for keeps), I just want to stream it in an external player instead of the embedded one, and then forget all about it.

Since mediaplayerconnectivity calls an application or script of my choice with the URL it should be possible to extract the FLV on the fly and pipe it directly to VLC or mplayer. Since the embedded player can do it a standalone one should be able to too.

Did you ever find a way to make mediaplayerconnectivity (man that addon needs a shorter name) to play youtube vids in vlc/mplayer?
