Firefox 3 works w,Kubuntu 8.04, Thunderbird won't connect

I upgraded from gutsy to hardy. Firefov 3 )ata Granparadios) did'nt give me much trouble (except for not importing bookwarks for Ff3 on previoun install). I copied the Mail folder from old to new TB, being careful that I was at the same level in both installations. The stored messages are all there when I look at the new folder under Dolphin but TB ignores them. Do they need to be indexed? If so, how?

since no one else has replied...would you consider just going in and emailing yourself each mail and then using the new app to open them?
