firefox 3 beta 5 open/save option not available
 

Hello everyone. I have been using the new firefox 3 beta and really like it a lot. I just recently ran into a problem though and I am not sure if it is a bug or something I did. I want to be able to click on a link and have firefox ask me whether I want to download it or open it. For some reason it is now set to automatically download it to my desktop. I thought no big deal I can just change it but I can't figure out how. I looked under edit->preferences and then "applications" but it has no applications listed and I am unable to add any to the list. I thought you were supposed to be able to have firefox do different things for different file types but for some reason my "application" section is completely empty and I cannot modify it. Any suggestions...? Thanks for the help in advance.

This is configured exactly as it was done in Firefox 2.

Edit | Preferences | Main Tab

In the middle of the window is the section named Downloads. Click on the radio button marked "Always ask me where to save files".

yea I understand why it is saving to the desktop as the default location to save to but I don't want to automatically save anything. I want to have the option of opening it or saving it. If I click the radio button to ask me what to do each time it gives me the option of where to save it but not if I want to open it or not. Any ideas...?

I think it may be a bug. I tried editing my mimesTypes.rdf file but no luck there. Thanks again.

So I fixed the problem by uninstalling firefox and then deleting the following folder:
/home/matt/.mozilla/firefox

Once I did this I reinstalled firefox and it worked correctly. I was still a little frustrated with why this happened so I tried it again. I click to download a .pdf file and clicked do this automatically and clicked save. But Then there is no way to reset back to the default setting where it asks you what to do. The way to handle this is to go to Edit->preferences and click on the application tab. With mine there were no applications listed and nothing to edit. Hence the problem. Now, the real fix:

install using adept or favorite application installer "firefox-gnome-support". Once this is installed then restart firefox and go back to the application tab. Waaaalaaaa! all the applications are listed there and I was able to select .pdf and tell it to ask me every time what to do. Hope this helps someone who was having the same problems as I was. :)
