Firefox 3.5 could not be authenticated?
 

Hi,
I am running Firefox 3.5.3pre, Shiretoko. I thought I had installed it with Synaptec. Now, it won't update. Here's what I get:

With update manager, I went to the 3rd party software tab, added:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/fta/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Then, I went to the authentication tab, hit the import key file, pointed it to:
/home/brianp/.mozilla/firefox.public.key.txt and hit close.

Then it asked me to reload and I did. Then, I got this error message:
W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY EF4186FE247510BE


When I go back to the update manager and hit install updates, it still says "warning, you are about to install software which can not be authenticated...

I hate to be running around on the internet with an outdated browser. Does anybody else have Firefox 3.5 or 3.7 installed, working (especially flash) and automatically updating?

I would hate to run around with a browser with outdated security patches, but it would be even worse to run one which had been hacked with malware.

I have run into more problems with Firefox and flash than all other Linux tools/programs/utilities combined. More than sound, video card and movies combined. I understand that the trolls at adobe have gone way out of their way to sabotage Linux systems which rarely contain any paid adobe software, but ff just seems to be much, much less stable and well integrated than average. Good thing there's Opera as a backup!

Your magical incantations appear to have done the trick. I just updated FF 3.7 and it behaved like a normal application.

How did this key get lost? I have over 1000 packages according to Synaptec. This is the only package which consistently misbehaves. Every FF I have ever used has been snafu in one way or another; 3, 3.5. 3.6, 3.7, ... They work one day and are broken the next. No sound, flash never loads, full screen crashes the entire machine, refuses to update, weird, cryptic error messages, library conflicts, black chunks on 1/2 of the video, breaks suspend; `killall firefox` fixes it, ....

If it were not for the cool add-ins, adblock, flash block, firebug, noScript, ... I would not bother, but I can't surf without them.

For the first time ever, I have 2 versions apparently running, 3.5 and 3.7. Wow.

I feel lucky that I've had very few of the ff issues that appear to be rampant elsewhere.

That being said, though I have used noScript and adblock in the past, I've been using privoxy for the past 7 or so years, so those two add-ons, especially, become somewhat redundant.

I guess what I'm getting at is that if ff continues to make your life miserable, you may want to install privoxy (as well as squid) and use opera, or chrome (when it's ready.)

On balance, FF does a lot more good for me than harm. I must take my hat off to the generous geniuses who contribute all of the cools add-ins and to those who kept the promise of a non-evil browser going after the great software satan tried to stomp it out with evilnet explorer.

I am monkeying with Pre-Release stuff to get the new features and performance so I have to accept a fair portion of the blame for the problems I have seen. Keeping the old, stable version and the bleeding edge version on the same system can lead to toes being stepped on.

I have tried every browser I can find, and FF is the worst, except for all the rest.

Hopefully, a bit of boots on the ground feedback, including specific error messages and detailed procedures attempted will help stabilize matters.
