I have a few machines with 32-bit Scientific Linux 4, which is a clone of RHEL 4. Recently they updated themselves to version 4.7, which includes Firefox 3.0.1. I made the usual links to the Java plugin, but Firefox doesn't see it. Java is enabled, but about:plugins doesn't show Java.
The plugin is
/usr/java/jre1.5.0_07/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so. I know, it's an old version. I made links in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.1/plugins, /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and ~/.mozilla/plugins.
Hmm, i noticed something simliar and i had the same problem. I was using firefox 2 and had a symlink from /usr/java/jre1.5.0_07/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox(version 2). When i was going to create the same link in the firefox3 directory i noticed that the plugins/ directory were not there. I tried to symlink from /usr/java/jre1.5.0_07/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and then i think i ran "ldconfig" to update libraries. After restarting firefox it worked for me. Im using fedora 9, so it shouldnt be that big of difference between the systems you and I are using.
Thanks for the reply. I ran ldconfig on the directory where the plugin lives and on the directories where the links are. For a minute I thought that solved the problem. As root, java worked fine. Then I tried it as an ordinary user, and there was no java.
The plugin file is mode 755. All the plugin directories are accessible to ordinary users.
