Firefox 1.5.0.4: NO popups unless I ok them?
 

I have a strict setup regarding popups yet they still come up. Click popups and navigation popups... they still come up. I'm thinking maybe they might be those flash popups I've been hearing about but I'm not sure.

Here is why I decided to post. When I ran Fedora Core 4... I enjoyed the fascist nature of popup blocking. In all the time that I used Fedora, I think I saw 2 popups that I didn't ok myself. I really enjoy that and got quite used to it. Basically, unless I click on a link that opens a new window (which I allow and prefer) nothing comes up at all for any reason unless I've ok'd it. When I switched to Slackware... that behavior is gone. It still blocks popups decently but for the most part I still see at least one per day. There is a site which I frequent that sends a popup even if I click on a blank part of the page (mail.com). That never happened in Fedora.

My questions:
Does anyone know why Fedora had such fantastic popup-blocking abilities whereas Slackware (plain Firefox 1.5) has mediocre abilities? I can't figure this one out.

Regardless, I'd like to be a popup czar again. Is there something for Slackware that I can install that blocks absolutely everything with the ONLY exceptions being in an "Allowed hosts" option?

I've heard good things about the Opera suite. Is it worth switching to simply because of the popups?

Any help or a nudge in the right direction would be fantastic.

I use Slackware and ArchLinux (a derivative of Slack) with very few popups.
I use Firefox 1.5 and Adblock (a plug in for FF) that takes care of all those pesty pop-ups even those with flash.

I've been doing more searching and your post (ralvez) made things "click" for me.

After considering the manipulation of the hosts file, I briefly sought to make the AdBlock filters that Konqueror has accessible to firefox. Originally I took it for granted that if Adblock was installed it was just installed. I wasn't thinking that maybe they wouldn't be compatible? I've been too busy today.

I am going to setup Adblock Plus with the Filterset.G for my firefox.

I wouldn't be surprised if the precompiled Firefox packages for Fedora already have the Adblock extension and a filterset provided by the developers.

Anyone have their thoughts about this? I know there is a FiltersetP available as well and was wondering if anyone has good things to say about either of them.
