Finer fonts for business cards
Hi Everyone,
Finer Fonts
I was looking to find out if Linux has a set of fonts that will print much finer on a laser printer because I was creating a business card for myself.
Using GIMP
It seems that an area painted in GIMP that has a slight angle to it shows the pixelation.
Whereas there are so many business cards that don't have that pixellation.
Using Colour Brother Laser Printer
I am printing on a color Brother HL3450CN printer - so technically, I should be able to print very fine edges.
Pictures print fine
It seems to print pictures really well, without the artifacts showing up on changes in colour. Not sure if that makes a difference though.

Hi Aardvark,
Error using Yum
I get the following errors when trying to use yum install freetype-infinality fontconfig-infinality:
failure: repodata/repomd.xml from infinality: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
http://www.infinality.net/fedora/lin...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found
Checked the site:
The repository only has upto fedora 20 subdirectories - not sure why though. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to figuring out repositories.
Know how infinality works?
I was also wondering - does infinality bring in new fonts or does it fix the font rendering machine on linux /fedora. Are you aware of what happens?

Hi Aardvark,
Font Corrections many
Started reading about pixels and the fonts... It looks pretty detailed. I guess, there isn't just one correction applied.
Why Not in Main Repositories?
I wonder why this stuff doesn't make it's way into the main fedora/linux repositories. It does seem to be a big issue.

Hi Aardvark,
I guess I stand corrected - they have listed on their forum that they are looking for maintainers....
Distributions
If someone wanted a specific distribution... one would have to manually make the changes - I personally don't know what's involved - but I guess it is too much work for me to figure it out.

Hi...
Not sure why you received the error message. I'm guessing you were able to install the repository successfully.
I think I found another way for you to be able to install Infinality. Go here and choose the version of Fedora you are using and then the architecture (32 bit [i386 or i686] or 64 bit [x86_64] or the "no arch" package.) If you need help with this, please ask before you install anything! Just let me know which version of Fedora you're using and whether your version is 32 or 64 bit.

I'm afraid I don't. You will need to experiment here.

I got the impression that it did both but I very easily could be wrong.
Hope this helps...

Hi Ardvark71,
I run fedora 21 - I had seen the link you are referring to - it's support goes up to fedora 20....
uname -a
yields the following:
Linux tryton.ott.cms 4.0.4-202.fc21.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed May 27 22:28:42 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
If you have any suggestions let me know.
Regards,
-6th-

Hi...
Which link exactly? From what I understand here, you should be able to use the repository for Fedora 20, as well.
Regards...

fedora is trying to keep everything in RPMFusion
now fonts are not VERSION spiffic nor mostly os spiffic ( fedora fonts can be installed on Cent )
it is not a good idea to use yum to put fedora 20 rpms on 21
fedora already has a TON of fonts
do a search
Code:
su -
yum search font
this will be rather LONG
also there is and never was a NEED to use a rpm
the NORMAL way to install a font that is NOT in the current repos is to copy/past it into ~./fonts
the "DOT font" folder in your home folder
and log out and back in

There are lots of professional-quality fonts, but I'd recommend Linux Libertine. The problem with serifed fonts is that they cannot be enlarged or shrunk too much without the quality deteriorating. Fonts used by professional printers come in a specified "optical size", so you can buy a Times 10 or a Times 24. Libertine has a Display version for sizes of 18 points or more, so you can use that for the name on the cards, and the standard Libertine for the small print.
If you don't want a serifed font, then Fontin is an "incised" style which enlarges well. In the sans-serif class, DejaVu and URW Gothic (which you have already) both lack the cramped look of Arial.

While I'm not sure if it will work, does just installing the Fedora 20 RPM package from here help?
Regards...

Why are you using gimp to make business cards? I use Inkscape in Linux and Illustrator on the Mac.

You could just be running into printer setting issues. A lot of times the default print mode is for speed, not quality. So you might just be seeing the FAX quality print which is like 300dpi.
You could try over sampling if images print fine. Make the business card at 3x's the destination resolution as an image. And then scale with bicubic to the size you will print the image as. Keep in mind the 600dpi as in dots per inch or higher capabilities of the printer and the size of the business card.
