finding Thunderbird for SuSe 9.3 with YaST?

when i do a search for mozilla, or thunderbird all i find are things for firefox. i would really like to have thunderbird installed via YaST instead of pulling down an rpm to be stuck in dependancy hell.

this is my first attempt at SuSe so please dont beat me to hard over the head, im much more used to apt-get install mozilla-firefox or thunderbird and be done with it :D

thanks.

Try installing apt-get.. Then find a repository with the package on it.. apt-get is, imo, the best package manager :)

yes i like apt-get and YUM, but want to give the YaST a chance as that is what is built into SuSe.

What did you search?

I just opened Yast/install software and typed thunderbird in the search field. I got MozillaThunderbird 1.0-5 in the list. (I already have it installed and running as my default email client.)

Just out of curiosity - if this didn't work for you - what are your Yast-Sources. (YaST / Change Source of Installation)

I have:

Packman(SUSE Linux 9.3) http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/9.3
guru(SUSE LINUX 9.3) http://ftp.gwdg/de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/9.3
SUSE LINUX 9.3 http:// <my local mirror>

The CD install is also listed but turned "OFF."

HTH!

Where FF and TB are concerned and because they are updated so often; I simply created a folder in my home page and installed FF, SB, and TB into it and edit kmenu. getting the latest versions are as simple as extracting the instilation folders and running the installers. A new nix install requires a simple repasting of this folder into the home directory.

well the guru URL did not work but was able to add the packman and find sunbird, but still not thunderbird...

[edit to add] when i try to open your link for the 'guru' URL it comes up as can not be found.

Lleb_KCir 08-10-2005 01:41 PM

ok i must be doing something wrong.

http://www.novell.com/products/linux...t_mirrors.html

i have tried adding close to 20 differnt mirrors from the official NOVELL web site and NONE of them work even ftp.suse.com and ftp.suse.de do not work.

where do i go in the CLI to manually edit this blasted list.

Lleb_KCir 08-10-2005 01:48 PM

not the clearest picture, but you can see by the search that Thunderbird is NOT in the list of packages i can install:

The no_inst_source is because there is nothing there. You've pointed YaST to the root of the FTP.

Dunno about guru's site. I'll check later.

As for YaST, you need to point to "current." Here's my FTP location

(I'm using HTTP.)

SUSE LINUX Version 9.3 http://suse.cs.utah.edu/suse/i386/current

In the "Server Name" text box I put suse.cs.utah.edu and in the "Directory on Server" text box I put suse/i386/current.

HTH!

PerfectReign 08-10-2005 02:04 PM

Oh, and I just checked - Thunderbird is most definately there...

http://suse.cs.utah.edu/suse/i386/cu...1.0-5.i586.rpm

Now back to figuring out Tomcat.

No, not this one...

thank you, that was the type of info i was missing. installed the source by your directions and poof not only was i able to get thunderbird, but i am also able to grab the libicu packages i need to get quasar running, i hope these are the packages i need.

[edit to add] yup that worked just great. quasar installed without giving me any errors this time.

PerfectReign 08-10-2005 04:27 PM

Glad that helped.

I should write myself a little thing on Yast Sources - seems to be an ongoing issue. At least it isn't as wierd as urpmi, in my opinion.

Lleb_KCir 08-10-2005 11:04 PM

have not used that one. only used YUM and apt-get prior to this week. this was my first use of YaST
