Financial records - what to use to record them?

I'd like to use a local peice of software (not web based) to keep track of my spendings. Im a poor and lonley bachelor.. that is also a geek... So I like to take some time daily to record my spendings each day (transportation, food, drugs, rent + bills, etc).

Im guessing a spread sheet would work for this, which OOo delivers but Im not quite sure how to use one (maybe a tutorial is what im looking for in this case.

How do you (if you) keep track of your finances? Would GNU Cash help me out? It's interface isn't very appealing.

Thanks.
