File system halts
how do i repaire a file system without loosing the data
got two disks with files i can't access
all the files are listed but when trying to copy or move it just halts

Insert your boot disk or cd and start in rescue mode.
When the prompt comes up, use fsck. Here is the online man page. Good luck!

Freezes on boot up or when using fsck?
(Just to make sure) Is either of your hard drives a Fujitsu MP34* ?

Freezes when using fsck?
Western digital and Maxtor
All data has been lost, rebooted and the entire file system even the partition was gone

only using Mandrake
but i believe now that it was hardware error
broken IDE controller and i only screwed up it more by trying to fsck

fsck is the command used to restore lost partitions.
Deleted partitions are usually caused by hardware errors, (which is why I asked about the fujitsu drive, find my third post to this site) or windoze viruses.
Try a new controller and see if anything comes back. Then make backups.
PS I lost two novels, fifty six short stories and ten years worth of diaries.

I lost about 445GB off Movies
fortunately all of that is replaceable
