File Sharing Utilities?
 

If I was wanting to share and download mp3's on the Internet, what would be the easiest program to do that with in Linux. I am running Red Hat 9 and I don't know where to find any utilities like Kazaa for Linux. Any ideas ????

Well get ready for a holy war. The three biggest ones are gtk-gnutella, dcgui, and limewire.

giFT in combination with giFTcurs is quite good. Check their site at gift.sourceforge.net
If you do install, please read the installation guide carefuly.

can't believe you did not mention giFT. You're walking on a tight rope, my friend. This will get ugly.

Which one in your opinion is the easiest to use? That will help me thought with the three that you mentioned. I think that one maybe to hard for me to try to install at this moment!!!

Okay Now that we've got that all cleared up. I downloaded gtk-gnutella! Installed it and it's up and going. Now all I have to do is figure out how to use the darn thing????

I think Kazaalite used thru wine is best - and I have tried gtk, limewire and dcgui.

I got kazaalite working fairly easily in rh 7.3 and 8.0, haven't tried it in 9 though.

Kazaalite has the largest database - which is the best thing about it and the worst thing about it also.

dcgui if you are sharing more than ~10GB of files will be your best option (excluding gifT since I've never used it I cannot comment on it). dcgui is very easy to use, all graphical with command line options. I don't quite think a filesharing utility needs a graphical user interface, however it does make for "first time use ease".

As for the holy war, it wouldn't happen if everyone could just stop using all the crappy programs and just use dcgui :D

That's a good point about dcgui, MasterC - in dcgui, the more you share, the better the hub you get in. I will say that the quality of files in dcgui is better overall than compared to kazaalite for example, but you can't top the kazaalite database. So as long as you know what you are doing with kazaalite, I find it better.
