File Monitoring App?

Hello All!

I was wondering if there was a *nix program that performed file monitoring in the following ways:

1. Watches all (or selected) files for: deletion, move, rename, chmod/chown activity, access, etc.

2. Creates a daily report that can be sorted by user and e-mails this report to the root user as well as logging and archiving these logs.

The use for this is that I have users telling me that they had a file and they can no longer find it, and I can find no proof as well that the file existed, so I would like a log that could tell me if the file(s) were accidentally deleted, moved, renamed, etc.

I can't think of anything like this, but it is probably because I have never had the use for something like this until now.

Thanks,

It's a free pendant of tripwire.
