Can somebody point me to light and fast file manager that is similar to winxp

nautilus is the file manager in Gnome.
it's the default file manager in any gnome based distribution I've used (Fedora, Ubuntu and Redhat/centos).
did you try it, and was it too heavy on resources?
Please tell us what distro you are using, and how much resource your system has (disk and ram). This way we can advise better.

I am using dsl and updated jwm with rounded corners.I have a p4 machine with 256mb ram and 40gb hard disk.I don't like the default dfm filemanager of dsl.As it opens each folder in new window and with no navigation.So I want a light yet powerful file manager that is similar to xp.

I don't know about the similar to xp part, but you might want to check out rox-filer and/or pcmanfm

I am still laughing about reading WINXP described as a file manager.

And one of the reasons Gnome is so Bloated.
If 'light' is a prerequisite, then Nautilus is not the answer! Thunar is good and pcmanfm is very light. :)

I actually prefer Konqueror as a file manager (I have no use for Dophin). I find it more versatile, but, now that Thunar can connect to Samba shares, I'm quite happy with it also. I consider either of them superior to Nautilus.

Aside:

I read it as meaning "a file manager similar to (the one in) Win XP." Given that persons come to LQ from all over the world, I guess I've trained myself to overlook occasional stumbles in English.

I would say KDE's Krusader but as with Konqueror, it will pull in about (50 more lib) files along with it.

Give Pcmanfm a try.

The way I look at it, with 500 GB hard drives and multi-GB RAMs, that's not a concern. But that's just me.

I understand and you're correct if you have lots of hdd space. But what if one doesn't want KDE or Gnome dependencies installed, at least the one's that have alot of dependencies.

If you keep adding KDE/Gnome apps, you may as well installed the DE, IMO. Again, as you have mention, with lots of drive space, I have installed both DE and some of the WM also.

Thanks for your suggestion everybody but I have already tried the file manager that are listed above and I am not satisfied with the above listed file manager.

wpeckham are you stupid that u can't even use your brain at all.
Can't you substitute Xp part with Explorer.It was that simple!!
Many things are said incorrectly ,Even Linux which is only a kernel is said as Operating system(which is GNU/Linux actually ).
People use the popular and easy words in their language!!
In hurry I wrote Xp instead of Explorer.A common man would easily understand that I was referring to Explorer.Linux Questions is here to help people learn Linux.It isn't a place to post your funny thinking !!

I said I found it amusing, it made me grin. I did not call you stupid! I do not remember calling anyone 'stupid' on any forum since my BBS opened in 1986, and I would appreciate the same courtesy.
As for posting "funny thinking": I would rather post and read thinking that is "funny" than thinking that is "sad", thank you.

Back to your question: I am heavily a CLI kind of guy and do not use one. I thought that the suggestions made looked quite good. You may not find one exactly to your taste, but I hope you find one that is good enough to get comfortable with.
I have heard many good things about mc (Midnight Commander), and it is one of those featured in the link by RockDoctor.
If you give it a try, please post back what you think.

---Afterthought about file managers: Many of those available are very configurable. IF you dislike certain characteristics of one you are using, you might want to check and see if the things you object to are configurable. You may be able to make one you have into the one you want with a few settings! If you describe exactly the behavior you want, someone here may be able to tell you what file manager they use that can be set exactly that way!
