file management

Is there a program for linux that will let users on the network checkout files from a server. this way only one user can edit a file at a time.(I don't want two people editing the same file at the same time.)

And, can this be compatible with windows also?

Do you mean something like RCS? Yes, it is CVS. As far as I know it can be used as a client server system, or a system just like RCS. You check out a file and others cannot update it.

I know this is a quite fuzzy answer, but maybe it gives you a hint into the right direction.

kinda like that.

When I was working in a company we used Xerox Docusahre.

I just was hoping there was an opensource alternative for a home network.

CVS should work, so should Subversion. With both you can check out a working copy, edit it, upload it to the shared repository (on the file server) and have yours and others changes to the file(s) merged. Subversion is rapidly gaining popularity as a CVS replacement.
