File id's

Hi,
I've seen several times scripts (mostly written in python) where , at the top, have a line with something like:

$Id$

which, I guess, when running some command , or script get automatically replaced with something like:

$Id: filename.py,v 1.1 2003/06/07 11:24:49 username Exp $

I would like to know if this is done using a common unix tool...

thanks a lot

It's a place holder for version information generated by RCS.

Thanks a lot!!

Finally, I realised that this placeholder is being used in Subversion on the files I found it.
