File Conversion and webcam issues

Ok everyone, I have two issues for you today.
1.) I am looking for a good, stable program to convert some .wav file to mp3.

2.) I have a webcam that I bought the other day and every time I try to use it, it crashes my computer and I have to do a complete reboot.
It's a Gearhead model# wc7401.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Give a look at lame.
2) What is crashing? The desktop (which one?) or the kernel? Can you switch to a tty with CTRL+ALT+F[1|2|3|...]?

Will look into lame, thanks on that one.
I'm not sure what's crashing but the whole computer freezes and then goes to the black screen of death (linux version of the win-blue screen of death) and I have no control over anything. The only option I have is to manually hit the reset button next to the power button on my box and hard reboot. I'm using opensuse 12.2 with xfce desktop. I have a resource deficient box so I have to use lightweight software.

Never heard of the black screen of death on Linux...
Try starting the system outside of X (set the init runlevel on LILO/GRUB command line at boot) and look at what happens upon plugging in the webcam. If the system freezes, then I guess it could be a kernel/udev issue, but if it doesn't please look at the output of
Code:
dmesg | tail -n 30
to see if there are any errors.
