file browser ordering by name

Nautilus file browser (gnome2) uses its own concept of ordering files by name.
While the gnome2 terminal does that correctly, the file browser mixes
up files, which, for computational chemistry, in the presence of many
composite names, creates problems.

For example,

min-01_02.coor

par_ara.inp

FE-OXY_colvars.in

and many other in between before:

min-01_02.conf

Imagine a long list - as it is in practice - finding where a particular min-01 is located creates discomfort. This is what happens with Debian wheezy.

Which alternative file browser could be used to get the alphabetically correct order (like from the terminal window, where all min* files are grouped together)? Perhaps better, which gtk-based alternative desktop to gnome could be installed? Lighter than gnome, with less automation would be better (for me).

Thanks

Nautilus should be able to sort correctly by name. Have you clicked on the Name-tab to sort it again by names?

I can confirm that Nautilus 2.30 on Ubuntu 10.04 does sort the sample file names correctly. As TobiSGD recommended click on Name at the top of the list once or twice to reorder the files.

If for some reason that does not work - open a terminal, cd to the directory where the files are located and issue the command ls | sort <enter> If that does not produce a list of file names in the order you expect please report back. Something interesting might be going on.
