Fedora core5-RPM eror

Hello there all my Linux comrads. Im new to linux and I have tried a few distros.Ive set up Fedora Core 5 from a DVD,if it helps the DVD iso file i downloaded was a i386.Everything works fine,But when i try and install any RPM file it comes up with the eror Cannot retrive software infomation,I wont be able to get online unless i can fix this eror,Maybe it has something to do with the config files in the YUM folder im not shure.If you can help me fix this ill appreciate it. |
I believe you need root to use RPM commands.

i am root ,so it should work.Also i didnt use commands all you have to do is click it also the same eror happens when i go on ADD/REMOVE software

Maybe you need to run as root: rpm --initdb or rpm --rebuilddb.
Otherwise if you mount the dvd, you can cd to the directory the rpm is in and run "rpm -Uhv <filename>" You can use tab completion to save some typing. Hopefully you can install what you need to get internet access. |
If you are clicking on things it means your in some sort of GUI, logged in as a regular user propably. The best thing to do is either try to use sudo in the commandline or log in the GUI as root and launch rpm from there.

I think your problem could be due to lack of internet connectivity. By default Fedora Core searches for packages on the net and not on the discs. There is a way to use the discs as the source for your packages, so take a look in the Fedora forum for a solution.
