Fedora Core 5 multimedia problems

I have been struggling w/ Fedora Core 5 for more than one week in order to install all the plugins required to transform my PC into a Media Center.

I even ran yum from console... waste of time. The last thing that I did was to install yum exterder but this has complicated the scenario. After ~30 minutes posting thousends of files, I cannot browse the plugins.

All the commands indicated in this website simply dont work. I even cannot install Panda for Linux... almost anything.

At least w/ Red Hat 9.0 I could listen to my music w/ no additional plugin required.

I'll keep on trying for one week more. If I dont get thru this, I'll go back to Windows. For ~$100 a may save some more nightmares.

In simples word, totally frustated and dissapointed.

Don't do something as drastic as switching to Windows. Maybe you should switch to a more friendly distro, like Novell's Suse 10, or Mandriva 2006. While neither of these (nore most distros in the US) will play most of the media files out of the box, there are ample sources on the net tailored for these distributions, like easyurpmi.zarb.org for configuring Mandriva's package manager.

I've used Fedora a few times, mainly to check it out. It is by far the worst desktop Linux distro I have seen. Just dump it and run for a better distro.

At least I can see it in Applications/Sound and Video... is an advance.

When selected, it do not activate thou. Do I may have the same problem to watch my favorite movies?

BTW, I tried Suse 9.1 in the past and return the OS. The problem is that there is no "generic" video driver in order to run the Nvidia video card, and you only see lines and more lines. I cannot access the console to install the driver.

goin back to Real Player (as well other plugins),is there a way to browse this files from yum? Do Linux has problems reading mp3 files?

I download all (quicktime, Panda, etc). I observe that in the console, typing "yum list available", the program scans a series if folders and display the files available. I tried to find in the filesystem some of the folders to copy/paste the plugin in order to force yum to "see" them. I cannot locate the folders. There is a folder called "flash" and even with "search" I cannot locate them.

No, only retarded distrobutions that ship without support built in.

most distros that have no mp3 support stock provide instructions on how to make it work with them, ubuntu for example.

If you are having trouble playing movies, the easiest way to make that work is to download mplayer (or xine, which I like better) and download the essential codecs package from mplayer's site (http://mplayerhq.com/). Unpack those into /usr/local/codecs/ and then set the win32 codec path in mplayer's (or xine's) setup to point there.

Setup the livna repo and install thir multimedia packages using yum/yumex. You probably need to install xine or mplayer as well as win32 codecs. Also search for "fedora+core+5+mp3" and "fedora+core+5+multimedia" on google. There are several articles that may help you out.
