fedora core 4 much slower than redhat 9?

dear friends,

i used redhat9 for my internet connection (IC) and IC sharing and i found it much faster than fedora 4 when i loaded it on the same machine.

there a three hadrdisk in my my machine pentium with 4 1.7 Ghz processor. the scsi hardisk(20GB) for windows, IDE HD(30GB) for redhat 9 which i boot from diskette in dive A & 20 GB HD for Fedora core 4 a newly installed OS.

when i installed fedora 4 to the designated hard disk i disconnected the cable from the redhat 9 hardisk thinking that it won't be affected. unfortunately after installing fedora 4 when i reconnected the cable the redhat OS has a defective booting. hence i shifted to fedora core 4 and made the redhat 9 HD a slave drive.

from then on, internet surfing is rather slow. before the installation i shared internet connection using redhat 9 and its quite fast. using the same configuration in redhat 9 for internet connection sharing, fedora core 4 is barely accessed by other computers in the network for internet surfing.

can i still boot up redhat 9? or can the fedora core 4 OS internet connection sharing be improved?

thanks for any help.

What is the rpm and cache of the different Linux hard drives?

If the drive is hooked to an IDE cable with a CDrom, it will be a slower throughput than being installed on an IDE cable with two hard drives.

pardon me but i am a novice compputer enthusiast. i just can not find even in the hardware browser the cache and rpm of the linux drives. do i have to dismantle this from the machine to physically see these specifications?

before trying to look into your suggestions, i changed the gateway of my PC with fedora 4 OS that is formerly connected to the internet to the IP address of another PC with Redhat9 OS. This PC(with redhat 9 OS) is now connected to the internet. Suddenly, internet surfing speed in fedora 4 is greatly improved! But this does not solve the problem, for i think fedora 4 should even have more capability in speed as a gateway being a new and upated linux OS than the older redhat9.

thanks.

From your description of your drives, I was assuming you had put the box together yourself and had the info that came with the drives and knew how they were hooked up.

I think you may be able to tell in Windows with the BelArc advisor utility and see what the drives are.

I can't think of a command to see what they are in Linux, but there must be a way. Perhaps someone else who knows more than I do about it.

Perhaps of you booted into one Linux and post the output of:

mount

then do the same for the other install, that might give some info.

Also, the output of:

fdisk -l

You may have to be root for the second command.
