Fedora Core 4 - Boot Splash Change
hello everyone. I am currently using FC4 at home and I like it. I was looking on kde-look.org and found a cool boot splash screen that i want to use instead of the default one with the pc on it. the new boot splash has the images and a file in a config folder that is of an unknown type. i'm not sure what to do with these files. i went on bootsplash.org but that seemed more like its there to show you details behind boot splashes, not install them. i think installing a boot splash in different distros may be different. i know in FC4 it uses rhgb to control the boot splash somehow but i don't know how to add different ones to it. can anyone help me out? to be honest, i'm suprised there is no obvious source of documentation for this. even on kde-look.org there is no installation directions for the boot splashes.

I think you have made some mistake.
Let clearified some point in your post.
What do you mean splash screen. As I understand, splash screen is a picture that appear on you grub 's screen before you choose what OS to boot. If I am right, you have mand these mistake. - You said that you want to change FC4 BOOT spalsh screen. But the BOOT splash screen is just a picture in 16 color mode. so, you can chang the splash screen by replace this picture, what are you looking for at KDE-look.org. - In addition, KDE splash screen is a small screen that appear after you login to KDE session. It is different from the BOOT splash screen, what are you intend to do with it? - FC4 do not control the BOOT splash scree. Grub do. Finally, this is the instruction to change the boot splash screen. 1. Grab any picture you want to be your new splash screen, save the with xpm format and compress the with gzip format so you will have a file with the .xpm.gz extension. 2. Copy all of them in a folder you like (normally we choose /boot/grub) 3. Open the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. 4. Find the line splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz and replace /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz with the path to your file. I hope this can help you |
no mistake
thanks for the reply. i didn't make a mistake though, kde-look.org has boot splash images, not just kde login splashes. apparently i have to go to /usr/share/rhgb and swap those png files with my own. i don't know how it's going to turn out, and i still don't know how rhgb is configured. the kde-look.org boot splashes seem to be desgned for "bootsplash" not rhgb. bootsplash uses /etc/bootsplash and FC4 obviously is not using that. so that's why i was confused. now that i know that i can change the images in /usr/share/rhgb, i guess i can still download the boot splash images from kde-look.org and just not use whatever config files they have. i'll give it a try and see how it works. i'll let you know what happens. by the way, thanks for the tip on changing the boot loader splash screen but i already knew that one.:D
