Fedora Core 3 Install Issues
 

Hi..

Another newbie (relatively) with FC3 installed and running but wqith some real headaches, mostly with networking and windows shares.

Have configured Samba to use the same workgroup as my windows boxes (running W2K and XP Pro) but nothing shows up when I try to look at the windows network.

I also have the same problem as many others, when the machine boots into Linux, I get the "FAILED" message on "bringing up interface eth0".

Very frustrating and, to cap it off, when I ask to boot into Gnome, O still wind up with the same interface as the FC3 defaults!

Any answers, please?

Fedora normally defaults to use gnome.

I'm a newb to FC3- just got it last week and had a similar problem with the eth0 boot up. I assume that my eth card was not detected upon installation because I was not connected to the internet while installing. But when I later went to plug it into a network to get the latest updates, the "New Hardware Configuration" window popped up while booting up.

Sounds odd- but try unplugging it from the network, allowing it to boot up and then shut down again. See if maybe it needs to reset your card settings. This may prompt the "New Hardware..." to come up--in which case you can take it from there.

Once my card was recognized-- I still couldn't connect to the internet (my mNDSResponder "FAILED" as well) I entered "Interactive Setup".
Type "i" to enter this when it begins your FC3 boot up. Then go through and click "Y" or "N"-- I believe that if you just hit enter this will default to "YES". Basically, this will let you decide Yes or No-- and in my experience the difference between "OK" and "FAILED".

In response to your XP box, I dual boot with XP-- and I don't know about network drivers (if there is such a thing) but I do believe that FC3 does not come with NTFS (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) drivers. I had to install those on my own in order to access my other HD. Perhaps it's the same with networks??

ALSO keep in mind--your network problem may be the result of the eth0 problem. Check and see if the Win Boxes are recognizing your Linux Machine on their network.

And I do believe the default desktop is GNOME-- but in the off chance that yours is not, go to:
Applications--> Preferences---> More Preferences--->Desktop Switcher
Once in this window, you should be able to select your default. I would suggest doing it as root, as that's where most permissions lie. You will probably have to restart the window system in order for it to take effect.

you need to give more information on ur box pal
blind talk doesn't help a thing
give me some output of command like "dmesg", "lspci -v" as root
what kind ethernet card do you have?
what model is it? did you configure it?
If you don't know what configure means, then it is like giving ur ethernet card an ip address and primary dns.
post all the output and i shall know where to start
