Fedora Core 1 RPM files - when I run them, I can't read them!

OK, so I've had Fedora Core 1 installed for about a month now, and with a couple of .rpm fiels I've installed, I've run into a VERY odd problem...

For example, with aMSN and Point2Play for WineX, when I run the actual application, everything is garbled, and there's no actual text, just ASCII symbols.

Any idea what causes this and how to fix it?

EDIT
I'm running KDE, if that helps
