Hi! I downloaded Fedora-10 from 2 different sites, and burned them with 2 different programs with the same result---they wouldn't boot. I remembered I had purchased Fedora 5 a few years ago. I found that---it's labeled Fedora Core 5. My question is, will I be able to upgrade to Fedora-10 if I install this version? I know the drivers and apps won't be up to date, so will I have to uninstall the apps to upgrade them? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you check the md5sum of the downloads before you burnt them? How did you burn the disks, are you sure you treated them as ISOs? Put the DVD i9n a drive an look at the contents. Is there 1 file (wrong) or a disk structure (correct)?

ps - the Core was dropped after FC6

I think it would be best to download Fedora from the official website:

How do you burn the .iso image you downloaded?

I wouldn't recommend upgrading from FC5 to F10. You would definitely stumble on many problems.

Try viewing the DVD/Cd if you see a file name whatever.iso you have burned the disk as a file and not an image. In order for it to be usable you have to burn it as an image. If you open the disk and see directories and such, you have burned it in the correct manner and the issue may be elsewhere.

Some of the older DVD drives (assuming you burned the disk on a different drive) cannot read DVD recordable media.

Hi! Thanks for the responses. I burned one iso file with magiciso, and the other with poweriso. The original files were 1.99 gb, the finished disks were 4.2 gb. I did notice afterwards that the boot.ini file was an iso file, both within the original file and on the finished disk. I've downloaded another copy from fedora's mirror, and the boot.ini file is also in the form of a poweriso file. Could this be the problem? Also, as to verifying the iso file, I'm not sure what they mean. What would be the proper SHA1SUM file---I'm using xp. The iso I downloaded is the 386 one.
Also, the commands they list seem to be linux commands. Am I supposed to type them at my command prompt? I'm guessing that I'd have to change the prompt to the directory I have the SHA1SUM file? Thanks.

Being poweriso just means you have poweriso installed and windows recognises a .iso as being associated with poweriso.

Thanks for the response. The verification process I referred to above is what you are asking me to do. I don't understand what I'm to do. I copied and pasted the url and the result was:

I just tried it without the | gpg -- import, and found a text file. I also found a text file clicking on the i386 link. Now what? Like I said earlier, the commands look like linux commands, and I'm using XP. I'm lost. Thanks.

Can you explain exactly what you are doing? At the very top of the page I linked, it says

DOH!!! Sorry, I missed the windows part. I ran HashCalculator and the output matched the SHA1 file. Now all I have to do is burn it, right? I checked the other 2 files I had downloaded, and they didn't match. I don't know why anyone would put up useless files on their website, unless they're selling dvd disks. Thanks for the help. I'll burn a copy tomorrow and see if it works. Thanks again.
