Fedora 17 does not work with Radeon HD 6850

I was originally using the integrated GPU in my motherboard, when I updated to Fedora 17. Now when I try to use my Radeon HD 6850, the system will not bot, and instead encounters a flashing (black/grey) screen. The upper half of some text (the usual text displayed upon booting, it seems) right at the top of the screen, replacing the line with different text quickly, as if scrolling through the lines as per a regular boot. But like I said, I can only see the top half of the top line of text. After this gets to the end, it just sits there. I have left it for hours. Removing my HD 6850 will allow me to use the built-in GPU again, and the system boots just fine. the onboard graphics use "Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880 ". I remember that with Fedora 16 My HD 6850 used "Gallium 0.4 on AMD BARTS". The graphics card is not damaged, as it works just fine when booted into windows. I have tried reinstalling the "mesa" drivers, and installing the components I did have installecd.

"yum install *mesa* " "yum reinstall *mesa* "

I am really at a loss here. I have the lastest updates (including kernel 3.4.4) and AMDs proprietary drivers do not work either (I tried the 12.6 beta and the lastest stable build I believe).
Does anyone know what I can do to be able to use my HD 6850 with Fedora 17? Even the gallium/mesa drivers would be just fine.

Thanks,

Can you get into the BIOS menus ok?

Since lots of people use that card on other systems, I suspect some BIOS interaction with the ASUS. Have you changed any settings from default?

The BIOS and bootloader all work fine. I have not changed any BIOS settings other than boot order. And like I said, it works fine when booting windows. But I will check with the BIOS settings and see if anything looks off and report back.

I actually cannot find anything in the BIOS about my GPU. I don't know what is going on here...

Hello,

I have almost the same problem...

I wanna install F17, but the problem is that the screen turns black once it wanna show the GUI... somehow i can see some kind of shadows of the GUI but it so dark as if the brightnes is switched of, and it seems that it's not able to deal with my Radeon HD 7450M

Thanks

OK, I have no idea about Radeon cards, but - what exact procedure did you follow to install AMD's proprietary drivers? Did their website say that those drivers would work for your card?
THAT would be the correct path to follow I think.

Btw, Mesa, AFAIK, is not a driver, it's an implementation of OpenGL for Linux.

To get my HD Radeon ti work I had to install firmware-linux & firmware-linux-free in debian not sure if it's named the same in fedora but that's most likely what you need also.
Hopefully this helps

New install most likely firmware, which would most likely have to be installed even to use the Ati catalyst installer.
