Fedora 14 and dvd

Hi! I just installed Fed 14 on a new Toshiba laptop. Then I did:

[root@fangshan2 ~]# yum install libdvdread libdvdcss libdvdnav gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad

They installed without problems.

But I can't play some dvds, a German language dvd for learners for example, and a BBC History dvd. That is to say, they start, but then I get 'stream errors'But an old Chinese dvd with about 10 Jean Claude van Damme films on it plays fine.

Any suggestions??

Hello,

What do you mean you can't play some DVD's? Could you post the warnings and/or errors that you are getting? Thanks!

Cheers,

Josh

Ok, this was the German dvd: Totem throws up little error windows with nasty red 'prohibited' signs and text like:
pa_stream_cork()failed: connection terminated
an error occurred: connection terminated
pa_stream_writable_size()failed: connection terminated

There is also no sound for the few seconds it does play.

Well this is a recurring problem for many, so I'll just add this:

There are many links and tips for dvd playback. Some are dead ends. I went to http://dl.atrpms.net/f14-i386/atrpms/stable/

There you will find libdvdcss2 (install that first) then libdvdcss

Now the dvd plays, but is jerky. I'm wondering if I need something else? The intro does not work properly, and has no sound, but from the menu I can load the various lessons of the German dvd.

I also downloaded xine, but that seems to have no dvd support, any tips there?

Quick update: it worked twice, but now the original problem is back, and I can't play the dvd.

Also embarrassing, cos in Win it works fine, and I am always telling the students, Linux is better!

Help!

over the years i have found that VLC is good for store bought dvd's
mplayer with the 2011 all codec for everyday videos

now there is always an exception ,a German language dvd like from "Rosetta Stone"
play on win 7

that bbc history might need to be played on the BBC movie player ( windows and mac only) if it was made by the bbc .

How do I get all the codecs for mplayer? I thought I had them with libdvdcss, but then it still doesn't do it! Is there anything else I need to dowmload?
The German dvd is a Chinese product, for Chinese students. The BBC dvd is original BBC, but has worked on my old laptop, before I installed Fed 15.

That did it: vlc plays both dvds fine! Woohoo!

I didn't even need to use autoplus. I did install it, but I had all the codecs already, the only option there was 'unistall'

Thanks guys!
