fbsplash slackware 10

I am trying to get fbsplash to work on Slackware 10 using this guide http://ftp.belnet.be/linux/yoper/non...gensplash.html
I have compiled kernel 2.6.13.2 with the fbsplash patch, have upgraded udev from linuxpackages.net and installed splashutils from linuxpackages.net . The splashutils source given on the site mentioned above doesn't compile.
While booting, the screen remains the same as it used to without fbsplash. Even after I get the line Setting up framebuffer splash, the screen remains the same. I have double checked the theme path set in /etc/rc.d/rc.splash.conf
/dev/fbsplash is created. What else should I check? Where can I get a newer Slackware version of splashutils ?. The one I am using right now is 0.9 I am guessing thats the problem.
Or could it be udev?
