Faster starting times for a 366mHz laptop.

My newly set-up linux system is on a Compaq Armada 1750 laptop. This machine is run by a 366mHz processor and has 128MB on RAM. It is running Mandrake Linux.

I notice that it takes quite a long time to boot (from bootloader to graphical login screen), are there any steps I can take to stop certain things from starting and make the whole boot process fater? I'm looking for a 'msconfig' alternative from my Windows days I guess.

Any help will be appreciated. Cheers, Ben.

Well we'll need to know which distro you use, if you're using Mandrake I can help a bit. I am a bit of an newbie too.

Mandrake 9.1 if it helps.

Unfortunately, I am only familiar with the RedHat distributions. This should apply to Mandarke too. I have found in setting up various systems that a lot of time some of the services that are turned on with the default installs are not needed for the purpose I will be using that workstation for. If some of the services that are running are not needed, then disable them. This will reduce the startup time. If you are using the Gnome desktop, in one of the menus there is a services gui that you can use to do this.

To change your startup services go to your Mandrake Control Centre. Next go to system and the services. From here you can choose which services you want to start.
Also run "hdparm /dev/hdc" and post the results.
