faster mail retrieval for mutt?

I use Mutt + getmail which works reliably but is VERY slow to download all my POP3 messages. Often takes an hour+ to download what outlook can do in seconds...

Any recommendations to replace getmail with something faster, or how to reconfigure getmail for fastest retrieval?

You can do what I do.

I have fetchmail setup as a daemon that fetches all my mail (from 5 mailboxes in different domains) every five minutes and puts it all in my PC's spool directory. Then I direct my email client to fetch email only from /var/spool/mail/my-username.

The only disadvantage I can see is I can't use webmail on any of the fetched accounts if my home PC is running. But then I just SSH into my home pc and run my mail client.

Another advantage is you can have a little icon on your icon bar light up when you have mail waiting. (At least you can with IceWM.)
