Failure to download repository issue

I just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 16.04LTS. I got some notices that the software was not up to date, so I went to the "Software & Updates" entry in the Applications menu. On the "Other Software" tab I checked the two items I've highlighted in the 'software updates' screenshot.

I may have gotten the 'failed to download repository' window then. I can't remember, as I was doing a lot of stuff. But later when I was reloading Synaptic Package Manager I got this window. (see 'Repository' screenshot)

Then just to test things, I checked the bottom item in the 'software2' screenshot. (which was for mkusb, which I just recently installed). When I did, it told me the software was not up to date, so I clicked on the update software button and it returned the 'failed to download repository information' window (also in the 'software2' screenshot.)

So. Two questions.

1) I'm supposed to check those boxes in the "Software & Updates" and the "other software" tab when they're pertinent, right?

2) What's up with all the failing to download repository stuff?

Thanks.

Suggested there be an internet connection during install. Did you read that?
Are you?

Hi Gregg...

1. In the "Other Software" tab, uncheck the very top entry that has "cdrom" at the beginning of it. Then have Synaptic refresh the sources list.

2. If your internet connection is working fine, the error message you received for the last entry may be caused by the site being temporarily down or no longer active. You can uncheck it or try again later.

Regards...

Thanks. Yeah, I read that about the internet connection, but I had an internet connection during the installation and right after too.

Ha ha. Thanks ardvark. I did #1 and no problems. So what the heck happened? And just in general, Am I supposed to be checking all these things in the "Other Software" tab?

Hi Gregg...

Your welcome

Usually, no. From what I've seen, the entries that say "Source Code" and the one that says "cdrom" are not (normally) checked. It appears that the last one in the list you had checked was either temporarily down or is no longer active and you didn't have the needed CD available for the first.

Regards...

Thanks ardvark. So I can just basically ignore that "Other Software" tab?

For the most part, yes. if you need to add a 3rd party repository, that is one place where you can do that, if needed and/or instructed.

Thanks ardvark. So if I get something outside of Xubuntu's repositories, it will show up in the "Other Software" tab and I should check it so as to get updates?

It should if the software has an update feature included. If you want updates for that particular software, then yes, you should check the box.
