Failing Linux Installation: Error copying files to the Hard Disc

hello,

I was trying to install Ubuntu (tried version 16 as well as 18) using bootable USB on my relatively old Macbook Pro (2012-2013) as a replacement for macOS. Ubuntu trial is working fine with both the versions but on installing Ubuntu I kept on getting this error

"
The installer encountered an error copying files to the Hard Disk
[errono 30] Read only file system : '/target/boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-21-generic'

This is often due to faulty Hard disk. It may help to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement or to move the system to a cooler environment
"

Is there a problem with the hard disk and is there a way to rectify it? I am very new to Linux and will very well appreciate some help.

Thanks
Gaurav

A hard disk problem seems likely. In this case, the solution is to use a different hard disk.

You can also check your disk's health. Since I have little experience with that, allow me to point you to a random internet page: https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu...alth-on-linux/.

Thank you Berndbausch. I checked in the Disk utility and it says in the assessment " Disk is likely to fail soon", though in the "SMART data and self-tests" for the disk, it shows only "Reallocated Sector Count" as failing and rest is OK (please see the attached image".

Any ideas if this can be repaired rather than changing the hard drive completely.

Thanks for the help..

A high reallocated sector count means that there's a significant amount of unusable sectors, so the data on those sectors has been moved to a reserve area. A failing drive will consistently increase the bad sector count, slowing it down significantly as more and more data has to be reallocated. It's not solvable, so you should get a new drive.

If Smart reports "Disk is likely to fail soon", then it certainly will. Just be grateful that it's not a drive full of data, like my one that failed at Christmas, and don't waste your time trying to use it.
