Question Failed to Auth. to peer connection terminated

I am a newbee with a friend that has been using Linux a long time, and often very well. Used a ver of Linux to set up a net work and gateway to the INTERNET from an old realistically useless notebook and docking station.
He has been helping me with a new ver its called DSL 2.2 and I have been using a tecra 8100 128mg ram and 10g HD and PIII 700 mHz and this little 50mg OS runs from the live CD on ram... we have been having a problem with PPP
I connect to the net via onboard 56K v.90 win modem (suppose to be supported). We get a mesg <failed to authenticate ourselves with peer> it recieves the password and logon but will not log me online.... it is as if it is looking for something more in the script than just the pwd and thank you steve
