Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon *Comes up at startup*
 

I finally got my Linux up and working, but as soon as I got it all customized I got the following message comes up as soon as I load into Linux:

There was an error starting the GNOME Setting Daemon.

SOme things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

THe last error message was:

Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

For some reason this happened after I uninstalled the KDE games from my GNOME only workspace. I am semi-new to linux, but I uninstalled the packages by using System Settings -> Packages, then unclicked Games.
If you have any idea of how I can stop this message from coming up, please respond.

I am using Mandrake 9.1 so I don't know if their solution will fix my problem. Even if it does, I don't know how to install the rpm they suggest, so I am still looking.

If anyone can enlighten me, I will be thankful.

I'm new to debian and have spent past 2 days trying to get sound to work in X. at the console i can put in a cd and run cdplay and it sounds great but when i boot X I get the same error message:

another thing i noticed that is VERY strange to me:
when i logout of X, the sound works - plays a little closing sound.
can anyone point me toward some hints about how i can see whats going on?

What sound card do you have?
 

I am a newbie, but I will try to give you a bit of help.

First, do you have a PCI or ISA sound card? I fixed my sound card problem, but I have an ISA card.

If yours is a PCI card, I don't know as I can offer much help. My sound card was ISA and I wasn't getting any sound at all. So I searched for some instruction on solving my problem and followed them.

To fix my problem, I logged in as root and typed sndconfig (or else, "run sndconfig" I can't remember which now). This ran a program which found my ISA sound card and figured it. Everything worked great afterward.

Your problem sounds a bit different, so I don't know if this will be any help.

i ended up just switching to kde - no problems now... except cups isn't setup right... and my cdburner... heh.
