Failed cups

I have a vexing Printer problem.
Unable to config. my HP printer, which here to fore, was mostly automatic and involved only a few choices.
First I got this Err, Msg. "Failed to connect to cups server"

Entering the following code:

sudo /etc/init.d/cups start
[sudo] password for mjh:
 * Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd
Warning: Fake start-stop-daemon called, doing nothing.
                                                                         [ OK ]
I don't know what to make about the warning. I don't believe that the server is up and running?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It may not "start" if it is already running.
Find out with ps -A | grep cupsd

If it is running, you could try restarting it
sudo service cups restart
(This will also start it if it was stopped).

Also, ubuntu is moving away from the SysV init scripts, to something called upstart, which is sort-of working.

Have you been messing with something? cups doesn't normally just "stop working". Perhaps give us some clues if the above does not work for you.
