F1-F6 Frame Buffer Problem in Suse 9.3 Nvidia

I have been working with a Toshiba M4 Tecra, running a dual boot XP SuSE 9.3 system. I was able to config. the nvidia with new drivers so KDE and GNOME work perfect.

NOW -- However -- when I crtl-alt f1-f6 I get weird screen output. Framebuffer F1 gives me a screen full of red and green blocks. F2-F6 give me only black.

Some threads have touched on this but most revert back to the original problem of not being able to start the XServer due to bad drivers.

I can boot into run level 3 manually at startup I just cant switch to it using the crtl alt commands.

Any ideas?

check if you have in /etc/inittab
Code:
# getty-programs for the normal runlevels
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
and that these processes are running
Code:
ps -ef|grep mingetty

I have the same problem on my workstation. It seems to somehow be caused by Nvidia drivers. Back in time, it was working all fine, until the drivers version 4469 (3319 used to work fine).
For some reason, when I use the latest nvidia driver, it mess up my stty output with green/blue/red block crap. I never found a way to fix this, I believe Nvidia put some buggy code in their latest drivers.

Now I use "nv" drivers and it works fine... but it sucks when it's time to do 3D.

It's a known bug and it's been in drivers for a while now. I was told of one fix which is to edit xorg.conf to ignore TV out. The thread is in this forum somewhere.

Another option (especially if you have and want to use TV out) is to set vga=normal in your bootloader. You will lose hi-res console but at least you have something to work on

Thanks

Thanks for the leads I will work on it and post my results.

I am actually testing Linux for a school. The desktop installs are fine, but with as many hassels as I am getting with the Nvidia on the Tecras, I think we might need to stick to windows.
