I've not used it on a recent KNOPPIX, but there used to be a GUI interface on KNOPPIX that would do everything for you. Have you tried that?

I ran my Knoppix 5.0 yesterday and did not see f-prot on it with a quick look around. It does have clamav now.

After my earlier post, I went back and checked with v5.1.1 and noticed this whole thing had changed since v3.4, which I was basing my post on. Back then, the "penguin menu" offered a choice of a "live installer" (knx-live-install.sh -- called something else in the menu) which would offer to install several packages including apt-get and f-prot from the Internet. The live installer played games that allowed these programs to run on a system where you couldn't write to large portions of the file system. This whole thing was probably dropped when they started using unionfs, which (I think) allowed a normal apt-get to work. Sorry for the bum steer.

@madhatter3, glad you found the answer and thanks for the link.

I knew I had used f-prot on an earlier version of Knoppix. I was thinking the f-prot program was included but the updates had to be downloaded. Now that I read about the installer I think that is what I used too.
