extract video audio

Hello, I am trying to extract audio from some video files.

I have tried:
mplayer -vo null -dumpaudio -dumpfile audiofile.mp3
This seems to work well for some of the video files. But for some of the video files, the mp3 files are just garbage. In XMMS and Totem they didnt even play, and in Naotun they produced some bad, almost screeching, sound for a second or two, and then stopped. One file converted ok in that it was played by XMMS, but there was this wavy artifact noise in the background for the duration of the whole file.

So I am just wandering of any alternative methods, and/or software that I could try.
