Question Extra processes


I'm booting to runlevel 3, do i really need all these processes that seem to have to do with running KDE?

If i don't need them, how do i stop them from loading?

Yup KDE needs all that.....
the only one i don't have in my list is kio_file
I'm not using PAM
possibly that's it
KDE does run better without PAM

Yes i can understand that but i'm currently not running KDE, i'm just booting to the console (runlevel 3). Do i still need them?

It looks to me like you actually are running KDE (and X). In other words, it is loaded into memory. Ctrl-Alt-F7 might change to the graphical display. The different F keys correspond to different virtual consoles.

There might be problems with the system's initialization files. Check /etc/inittab and the output of /sbin/chkconfig --list. X11, xdm, kdm, prefdm or anything like that shouldn't be started at a text-only runlevel. To get the manuals for inittab, init, chkconfig or whatever, use man <name of the thing>, eg. man chkconfig.

EDIT: To be clear, those processes you mentioned are not needed if you don't want to use KDE.
